MAR.04.2010 – Vinnie Moore Diary Tour 2010 – Insane Flights at Dawn!!!
It’s over!!! It’s over!!! What a shame. I miss it already...
I’m writing at Madri airport before boarding to São Paulo. I think this is the fourth or fifth time I pass through this very airport. Another airport we visited a lot was Milan airport due to connections.
After our day off in Cologne, Germany, we headed for Belgium by van and arrived there after about two hours. The venue was very cozy and in spite of all the snow outside there was a good heating system indoors and that cheered us up. The gig was one of the best of the whole tour and, in spite of all the snow falling in the region, more people than expected showed up. The owner of the pub said that people couldn’t even leave their houses due to past blizzards.
The following day we were going to play in London and left at 7am to arrive there at 5pm. In the course of this trip we even caught a ferry to get there. We only had time to drop off our luggage at the hotel and head out to set up the equipment and do a sound check. As the equipment was ours, the whole process took no more than an hour and a half, after which Vinnie conceded some interviews. That gave us some time to stroll close to the pub and buy some souvenirs. That was the only day when something like that was possible. At this gig we met Tristan, an extremely nice guy who takes care of Vinnie’s designs only because he is a huge fan.
The following day we flew from London to Madrid and after another connection we arrived in Munich at 4pm. The crew had left London at 4am right after the gig to meet us at the Munich airport. This was the only way the band could sleep a little longer and the three guys of the crew took turns driving and sleeping. We left Munich airport and went straight to a pub in the city of Wetzlar. It was very cold and we had no time to warm up for this gig. After the gig was over and all the equipment loaded we arrived at the hotel at more or less 1am and slept until 5am when we got up and set out for Las Palmas, Spain. This time it was only the band and the sound technician, Martin. In other words, this was definitely going to be another nightmare since there’d be a local backline for all of us. To be on the safe side I always carry my DW 9000 double pedal, a closed hi-hat machine, two hi-hats and two Paiste splashes plus a Mega Cup Chime. These would save me if there wasn’t a decent ride available. We arrived at the end of the afternoon, left our things at the hotel and set off for the sound check. We were all exhausted due to the trip, but before the sound check the local promoter asked Vinnie to visit a fan. This boy was one of Vinnie’s biggest fans in Spain, but due to chemotherapy treatment wouldn’t be able to attend the gig and was completely desolated. With a huge smile on his face – and very willingly as usual – Vinnie didn’t think twice and took his guitar to jam with the boy. I thought his attitude was very worthy and this comes to show his concern as to his fans. Once again, his humane attitude took me by surprise.
This trip to Las Palmas was a nightmare for me in particular. As soon as I received my luggage still on the airport luggage conveyor – where all of my equipment was – I realized that all the straps and the extensor that rises so that the wheels can be used were all broken. I had to drag the damn bag around the airport because I couldn’t find a cart. People who saw me must have thought I was crazy because I was hugging my suitcase as if it were the most important thing in the world. Actually that was the only way I could carry it since it weighed almost 25 kilos. After all the hassle to set up a local drum set, I found time to buy another bag to transport my equipment the following day without looking like a madman at the airport.
The following day brought one more flight and one more local backline. We returned to Madrid and from there we set off to Bilbao in a van. Another 4 hour trip as usual... (laughter). At this point I already had a pillow I borrowed from some hotel so I could sleep whenever I had no place to lean against. This pillow was remembered various times when Vinnie introduced me at gigs. There are many bizarre stories... (laughter). Besides the pillow stories, he always told the public that all the energy I had for my drum solos was due to all the coffee I drank, always sweetened with tons of sugar. He’d kid, “If you are a drummer and want to play like this, drink coffee with lots of sugar… (laughter).
At this point of the tour the pranks were getting closer to what I was used to… Dropping coins down each other’s pants, pushing around... In other words, I was already feeling at home and that was one of the best things of the tour: the camaraderie. Up until then these gigs in Spain had been the best in terms of public.
After Bilbao we went by plane to Frankfurt where we’d play in a little German city called Habach, at the Pub Village. During this gig something very bizarre happened. A guy right in front of the stage was dancing as if there was no tomorrow while Vinnie was playing loads of technical and virtuoso things on the guitar. Soon Mike noticed this and we began having a ball with the situation during the gig. The following day Mike danced like the guy looking like a crazy octopus (laughter).
When we checked out of the hotel at 5am it was freezing cold. We headed for Frankfurt airport where we caught a connection to Milan and from there on to Beirut. We spent the whole day in transit and only arrived in Beirut in the evening. We went straight to the pub to tackle the local equipment. For the first time in my life, I saw a drum set with three tom toms and one pedestal for each of them. In other words, impossible to set up. I did a quick fix and used a kit with two tom toms (10 and 12) and a floor tom (14) and coated drum heads. We didn’t even have time to eat dinner so when we were returning to the hotel, the gig contractor stopped in front of a restaurant, grabbed the menu and we ordered from the car to eat in the hotel lobby after a 20 minute shower. The traffic in Beirut is insane. They drive wherever they please, don’t stop at red lights, at pedestrian crossings or parking zones. In other words, a great PARTY!
We checked out of the hotel at 2:15am to catch a 4:05 flight from Beirut to Istanbul and then a 6:30 flight to Vienna. We arrived in Beirut in the evening and left the city at dawn, without seeing daylight. Isn’t that insane? We arrived in Vienna at 8:30am and there was Gabrielle (the guy of the damn fart) carrying a sign that said “Mr. Fart!” (laughter).
After an hour and a half in a van we arrived at the hotel exhausted, but we had the whole day to sleep. Before going to bed I wanted to eat something and went for breakfast close to hotel at a place suggested by the receptionist. When I got there the place reminded me of a gas chamber. Everyone was smoking. I left the place swearing and people who passed me by on the street looked somewhat frightened. I slept until 6:30pm and then went to do the sound check. The way I woke up - with someone banging at the door - didn’t leave time for a shower. Shower? What’s that?
I didn’t even have time to enjoy the gig and it was already over. The lobby call was going to be at 4:30am and as I had slept all day I decided to check out my emails. Before leaving I took a shower so I wouldn’t forget what’s that’s like. Before the last two gigs in Greece, we stopped in Cermenate, Italy and played in a very cool pub with excellent sound and very captive public. I met Andrea, an Italian affiliated to my fan club and wearing my octopus T-shirt. Can you believe that? Awesome!!!
A few more hours by van and we arrived in Milan (again) and from there to Athens and on to Thessaloniki for the penultimate gig of the tour. We spent the whole day traveling and arrived at the end of the afternoon. We went to the hotel where I managed to sleep for 40 minutes and then off for the sound check. When we arrived, after the usual setbacks because of the local backline, we did the sound check and went for dinner next door to the pub. During this time span, Mike spilled Coca-Cola on the keyboard and some also fell on my new bag (NO!!!), but Vinnie quickly turned my bag over so that the liquid wouldn’t sink in. We were all set for the gig, got up on stage and Mike said, “Wait, the keyboards aren’t working.” We waited on stage for a while trying to solve the problem, but nothing happened. The gig took place without keyboards. It was frustrating. Mike got up on stage to sing the songs and left. If that had been the last gig of the tour…
Fortunately we still had a gig in Athens the following day and even though the backline was local, Mapex provided a great drum kit in accordance to the rider and everything was fantastic. Things went so well that they sent me Black Panther snare 14” X 5.0” that I’m taking back to Brazil. I’m thrilled with the projection of the snare.
Now as to the gig, it really was the best in terms of the participation of the public. The venue was crowded and the public was almost invading the stage. Awesome!!! It was a great exchange of energy. The tour couldn’t have ended in a more positive manner. Backstage after the gig, we said goodbye to each other since all would be leaving the following day at different times.
To make a long story short, due to our great effort the tour was fantastic. That’s how tours in Europe are, a whirlwind. It has always been like this. In the whole, 19 flights in 11 days in a row!!! Besides being an insane number, the schedules were the worst possible. Anyway, it was worth it. It was awesome to live with these guys during this time. Martin, our sound technician, was always willing to help whenever possible and his sound was like a CD!!!
Mike is your typical boisterous North-American, the kind who claps his hands when laughing, just like in the movies. He has an enormous heart and loves shooting the breeze. Lars, besides some insane tricks with the slaps on the bass during solos, is always very kind and polite, and before we began our meals he always said, “Enjoy your meal, guys!” Furthermore, he always liked talking about the details of the gigs, about our best grooves on given nights. Each time I did something different from the original song on the drums, he gave a sideways laugh like, “Cool, man!!!” As to Vinnie, I was already a great fan of his music, and as to the person, it was a big lesson. To live with him these days in various different situations was sensational. Even though the schedule was tough, this never hindered us as a band, for we were all enjoying each other’s company. I will never forget these guys and the tour. Besides having a great time, I fulfilled a big dream and that was playing with Vinnie.
Now we are going to prepare ourselves to begin the Hangar tour in Brazil. I miss playing with my friends Nando Mello, Eduardo Martinez, Fábio Laguna and Humberto Sobrinho. I want to thank them all for having encouraged me to do this tour with Vinnie Moore.

FEV.15.2010 – Vinnie Moore Diary Tour 2010 – Carnival in Germany!!!
We traveled six hours by van from Salerno to play in Pisa, also located in Italy. As soon as the gig was over and all the equipment into the van, we went straight to Milan airport to catch a flight the next day at 10 am. We left Pisa at 4 am and I didn’t even have time to see the tower that doesn’t fall. It took us another sleepless six hours to get back. We caught a flight to Budapest and then a connection to Istanbul, Turkey. Lucky for us, the hotel was located on a busy avenue and the pub where we would play was right across the street. We dropped off our luggage in our rooms and half an hour later – without having slept properly for the third night in a row – we started the whole process of the tour’s first gig without our equipment, which was still in the van in Italy. As I had already expected, it was no easy accomplishment… But all of this had started a week before…
Mike Dimeo and I had met at Rome airport on the 1st of February where we were received by Gabrielle, who works with the company that was managing all of the gigs. We hardly knew what a nice guy he’d prove to be. As the days went by, we began finding out. Mike had already been extremely nice the first time we met him. He had already played with bands such as Riot, The Lizards, Masterplan, among others. He was very experienced as to tours in Europe, since he’d done several of them.
As soon as we arrived at the hotel, we took a shower and went after something to eat. At the reception we were informed that Vinnie Moore was already at the hotel, but we decided not to call him since we thought he might be sleeping. We did the right thing. He called us later and the three of us went out to dinner.
Right after dinner we discussed the repertory to define the order of the songs and then went to sleep. Vinnie was always very open to our ideas and this was an indication that it would be a very easy tour, even though the schedule would be very hectic.
The following day we had our first rehearsal where we met bass player Lars Lehmann – who plays with Uli Jon Roth – and UFO’s sound technician Martin Leisner, who is also German just like Lars. Both of them arrived at the rehearsal straight from the airport, already getting used to the tough schedule we’d have to face during the tour.
After all the equipment was set up, we began rehearsing the repertory, playing each song two or three times already on the stage of a venue called Cross Roads, where our first gig would take place. During the first day we rehearsed for about five hours, not counting the setting up of the equipment. Later we had dinner at a great pizzeria where we took our first photo together.
The following day things were pretty much the same. We rehearsed for another six or seven hours, now with an open PA and after the sound check. We rehearsed with the sound that would be used at the gig and even though it was terribly cold in the venue, the rehearsals went very well. Sometimes I looked sideways and saw Vinnie playing songs such as Daydream, Cinema and Check it Out! and simply couldn’t believe that I was there. In 1995 I had a band called Infra Blue and we played some of Vinnie’s songs and here I was, 15 years later, playing those same songs with him. The first time we played the song Cinema, of the Meltdown album, I remembered my friend Richard Powel, guitar player and a great fan of Vinnie’s work. He used to come to our rehearsals back then, at Frank Solari’s studio in Porto Alegre.
Very well, after rehearsal we went to the same pizzeria we been to the day before and I realized that Brazilian pizza is better than Italian pizza (laughter). During dinner I had Vinnie autograph all of the CDs I had bought over the years. He thought it was really cool that a drummer had all of his CDs (laughter).
The following day would be our first gig. We arrived at the venue at 5 pm and rehearsed the whole gig one more time. We were ready for our first gig. Even though we’d only done two rehearsals and one sound check, things went well and everyone was satisfied with the outcome of the first gig… especially Vinnie’s fans.
It was so cold during the second gig that when we played Saved By A Miracle, during which I have a drum solo, I wasn’t even working up a sweat yet. But anyways, I did it. I had to do it. It is different playing a solo when Vinnie is introducing me before the song. It is a lot of pressure. Another factor that causes pressure is that the drum solo is in the middle of the song, so the rest of the musicians are on stage waiting for my drum lick (which is always the same) to return to the song. The problem was that Tommy Aldridge had recorded the solo and I was playing it my way, but remitting to his solo in some parts. I had to respect the great master of the double bass drums. Besides him, Vinnie also had played with Joe Franco, Steve Smith, Shane Gaalaas, Van Romaine among others and Mike had already played with Bobby Rondinelli, Bobby Jarzombek among others. That is without mentioning Lars. In other words, they had already played with fantastic drummers I admire very much.
This time I’m playing a free drum solo, without bridges. When it’s time for me to begin the drum solo, I think about what I’m going to do and then I just play whatever comes to mind. A free solo is always risky and sometimes you’re not very lucky when executing it. Other times things simply flow naturally. It is a good way to practice improvisation, but it is very difficult doing this while those guys are standing on stage watching me every night.
After the third gig we went to Terano, still in Italy, where Vinnie would be doing a workshop. It was great to be able to observe him playing all the songs I was already used to listening to on my iPod. His punch, precision and feeling are amazing.
The same day we had the opportunity to meet Gabrielle (our Italian agent). In the middle of the pub where the workshop was being held he let out a terrible fart. This terrified all of those present. Mike and I had to grab him in a chokehold.
At the gig following the workshop I played a longer drum solo since the venue was smaller and I felt really comfortable. When I entered the dressing room after the gig, Vinnie said, “Your solo today was awesome!!! The public loved it.” I was somewhat embarrassed and answered, “Look, I think I prolonged it a little and I owe you an apology.” He said, “No way. I want you to have fun during the tour. If you are happy, so am I.” I was taken aback by his magnanimity and this very magnanimity has shown itself at other moments every day.
After this gig we went to Pisa and then on to Turkey where we performed our first gigs with a local backline and of course this cause every type of conceivable trouble, but we settled everything calmly and the two gigs in Turkey ended up being incredible. Vinnie’s fans sang all the guitar melodies of the songs and were hypnotized by the manner in which he performed them. It is really awesome to see him play up close, especially if you know the songs.
One of the things I have to comment upon is something I saw in Istanbul. It is the way the bread is used during meals. Everyone touches it with no problem and it still continues to be very good for consumption. I even took some photos of a store that only sells bread which we saw when returning to Istanbul, one day after our gig in Ankara. After the two gigs in Turkey, the following day at 2:30 pm we got into the van for the drive to the Istanbul airport. After almost 10 hours traveling (both by van and plane), we arrived in Cologne, Germany for two days off. There was snow everywhere. I’m going to sleep as much as possible because from now on the schedule is going to be even more hectic.
There will be 11 gigs in 11 days. And we’re still going to fly plus use the local equipment at some gigs. It won’t be easy, but I’m sure everything is going to work out because the vibe is really good and we’re all very happy to be together.
I’ll write more shortly and send more pictures.
All the best, Aquiles

And there guys, it's all right?
Recently I was in the Namm Show in Anaheim, a city located right near Los Angeles. I not played, but participated in two autograph sessions at stands of Mapex and Paiste. Another great thing was the party of Paiste that rolled after the show on Friday 01/15 days and great drummers and celebrities were there. ..
I was interviewed for the Drum Channel by Terry Bozzio and knew very drummers that I had not personally seen at the fair. .. I also found the Brazilian drummers Douglas Las Casas, Gustavo Conde and Acacio Carvalho.
At the moment I'm killing myself every day rehearsing for the Europe tour with Vinnie Moore (who also met at Namm) and finishing my DVD. In brief tour of this new command, I promise that keep you informed...

JAN.15.2010 - Aquiles Priester releases "The Infallible Reason of my Freak Drumming”
After the success of the DVD "Live In Concert - Inside My Drums", released in 2004, drummer Aquiles Priester (Hangar) releases his second instructional video. Recorded at the Cantareira College studios in São Paulo on the 31st of October and 1st of November 2009 by production agency Old Jack, "The Infallible Reason Of My Freak Drumming" brings songs included in the last two Hangar albums ("The Reason Of Your Conviction" and "Infallible"), in the Freakeys project as well as drum solos. The material was recorded with six cameras in full HD system, thus allowing Aquiles’ performance to be shown in detail.
Besides the songs, "The Infallible Reason of My Freak Drumming" contains countless details which will be the joy of drummers, be they beginners or experienced. The video contains a series of exercises, executed both on the rubber pad as on the actual drum kit, such as paradiddles, one of Aquiles’ trademarks on the bass drums, exercises using both bass drums, tips about the basic position of hands when holding the drumsticks, initial positioning at the drum kit and a description of all the equipment used by him. Besides all the didactic material, there is also a revealing interview conducted by journalist Antonio Carlos Monteiro.
Perfect for drummers or even rock fans in general and Aquiles’ fans in particular, "The Infallible Reason of My Freak Drumming" promises to be a differential in what refers to instructional videos for drummers – the same way as Aquiles also is a differential when speaking of musicians who revolutionized the art of playing drums.

JAN.05.2010 - News: The band Hangar inaugurates own tour bus
The band Hangar closed a deal with Selenium, the largest Latin American loud speaker manufacturer. They also manufacture Maverick amplifiers. The result of this partnership is unique in the national heavy metal market. For the first time in the history of the style in Brazil, the band will travel in their own personalized tour bus, carrying all stage and PA equipment necessary for the gigs. Therefore, all “The Infallible Tour 2010/2011” gigs will have the same stage and sound, no matter where the band will be playing. “This is the main reason why we still didn’t officially begin the promotional shows of “Infallible”. We were waiting for the bus to be completed,” says drummer Aquiles Priester. “We want to promote the album in an innovative manner in the national market because we’re sure that every heavy metal fan deserves to see and hear a quality gig,” concludes the drummer.
With this initiative, gigs are more viable than before since the transportation costs of the band, crew and equipment are usually very steep. With their own tour bus, the cost-benefit relation will be more interesting thus facilitating gigs all over the country.
The band is already scheduling gigs in Brazil for March 2010 and contacts should be made by email: contact@hangar.mus.br
The Infallible Tour 2010/2011 is endorsed by: Selenium, Maverick Amplifiers, Mapex Drums, Paiste Cymbals, Evans Drum Heads, Pro-Mark Sticks, Staff Drum, Audio-Technica Microphones, DW Pedals, Gibraltar Hardware, Urban Boards PsychoShoes, Aeroric Customs Drums, Ciclotron, Zoom Effects, Power Click, Warm Music Amplifiers, Loud Vox, D’Addario Strings, Planet Waves Cables, Takamine Guitars, Ledur Guitars and Basses, Tokai Electronic Organs, Shred Cases, Strazza Cases, EM&T, Playtech, Consulado do Rock, Lady Snake Rock Wear, Batera Store, Joker Tattoo, Jander Tattoo and Stay Heavy TV Program.

Release Hangar – Infallible
“Infallible”. This is the name of Hangar’s new album. And, besides the evident meaning it has in the album’s context, few words could fit the band as well as it. The perfectionism and hard-work demonstrated by the band for over 12 years is palpable in each and every album, always commanded by world wide known drummer Aquiles Priester.
For the production process of the fourth album, Hangar secluded themselves in a farm near Tatuí (located in the countryside of São Paulo, home to one of the best music schools in the country, and for that reason known as the “Music Capital” of Brazil), where Aquiles, Eduardo, Fábio, Mello and the new lead singer, Humberto Sobrinho, dedicated themselves to composing the ten songs of the album. After that, they recorded guitar, bass, keyboard and vocal lines in the same place, using the mobile unit of Daufembach’s Studio, under the command of sound engineer Adair Daufembach. The drums were recorded at The Magic Place Studio (Florianópolis), in a room specially projected to provide the perfect ambience for the instrument. Subsequently, Aquiles traveled with Adair to Celle (Germany) to mix and master the CD with Tommy Newton (Area 51 Studio), thus finalizing an album of exceptional sound quality, clear and bright when necessary, without losing the characteristic dirty sound a good Heavy Metal album.
Infallible, according to the band, represents the very feeling they want to transmit to their public with the new album. “It’s our most extreme album, whether concerning technique, virtue and speed or the more melodic, accessible side”, says Aquiles. As to the lyrics, even though this is not a conceptual album, they have a theme in common: “They talk about the forces that move human beings while pursuing their aims, without leaving the path of honesty. It’s an optimistic album on the subject of fighting and accomplishing goals”, guarantees the drummer.
“The Infallible Emperor - 1956” is the first track of the album, presenting a beautiful vocal melody interpreted at high speed commanded by Aquiles’ double bass drumming and by Martinez’s guitar riffs. “Colorblind” is more intricate theme, with several rhythm shifts and striking backing vocals. Humberto has the opportunity to show all of his ability in “Solitary Mind”, which is an inspired mid-tempo composition. Drama plays its part in “Time to Forget”, a ballad with Theo Vieira as guest musician, and which opens the way to the power thrash metal “A Miracle in my Life”, where Humberto uses some precise drives and the band presents the most speedy and brutal work of their entire career. More direct in its harmony, “The Garden” presents us with an elaborate composition and an inspired, though short, keyboard solo by Fabio Laguna, not to mention a very different structure when compared to the other songs.
It was no accident that the next track, “Dreaming of Black Waves”, was chosen to be the album’s first video clip. Its catchy melody contrasts with an amazingly beautiful musical arrangement, especially in the leading and backing vocals of guest singer Stefanie Schirmbeck, from the band Holiness. Another modern ballad, “Based on a True Story”, shows an extremely up-to-date band, while “Handwritten” is a very competent power metal, again bringing a different interpretation by Humberto. “Some Light to Find My Way”, has a hard rock influence in its first chords, shifting like magic to an efficient power metal with unforgettable choruses.
To close the album, Hangar recorded two cover songs. The first is “39”, a classic by Queen classic that the band managed to recreate with tremendous competence – especially Humberto, who was approved with honors in the difficult task of singing a song from such band. This song was chosen, says Aquiles, because of the following reasons: “Firstly, we didn’t want a number-one hit. Apart from that, our intention was also to show a little of our acoustic background and to prove that we can know how to be simple when necessary”.
The following may be the song the fans find most peculiar. “Mais uma Vez”, released only in Brazil, was written in 1987 by Flávio Venturini and Renato Russo and is part of the album Sete of the group 14 Bis. Besides, the song counts with special guest stars Roupa Nova on vocals. According to Aquiles, “the first time I heard this song in the 80´s, I felt inspired by the lyrics. During all these years the song had a very strong meaning in our work and we had already played it acoustically during the tour of our last album”. According to the band, Roupa Nova has a tradition in what refers to participations in albums of other artists: the band only accepts an invitiation of this type if all six members agree, since they don´t do individual participations. In short, the musicians of Roupa Nova not only approved of the version of “Mais uma Vez”, but also created a very unique interpretation for the song without abandoning the characteristics of the sextet. In the long run, the contrast between an insinuating song, Hangar´s heavy instrumentals and the soft voices of Roupa Nova created something totally new and captivating. Aquiles states that this version of "Mais uma Vez" is a turning point for the band: “We were always great admirers of Roupa Nova´s work and having these guys on our album is one of the most important moments in our history. Furthermore, we can show our fans and music lovers in general that we are exactly like everyone else and also need an extra dose of daily motivation."
The last track is a remake of “Like a Wind in the Sky” of the album Last Time (1999), and will be released only in Japan. It has a great melody, amazing backing vocals and a perfect instrumental performance.
Direct, varied, competent… Certainly the soon to come reviews of this new album will contain these and many other adjectives. If anyone prefers to use the word “infallible”, they will be right too.

APRIL.24.2009 – Hangar’s Recording Diaries: A headbanger’s tears are not those of a crocodile...
The beginning is always harder, since it’s difficult to establish a rhythm, but those days are already gone… Now many of our songs are already finished and have gained their own life, going far beyond any of us had imagined…
Now we’re recording the bass, guitars, acoustic guitars, leading and backing vocals. After that, to finish our work, we have to record guitar solos and fit the keyboard part that Fábio is doing at his home from the files we send him by Net… We only have net when we go to Tatuí, since our piece of land, ‘Recanto das Águas’, is about 12 km far from the city, and the road is pure earth… Rainy days transform it in a rally, I mean, a big PARTY!
Mello has already finished his part and is already in his comfortable home, away from the dangerous jungle… In order to do that, last Sunday we spent the whole night until 7am on Monday working, and Adair (aka Ram) had his first MASTER “breakdown”, crying out loud: “I’ve never spent a night awaken, let alone working!”... And one of us said: “Welcome to our weird and adorable crazy little world…” To easy our life, we’ve ranked the different levels of breakdown: junior, senior and master. The champion so far is Mr. Martinez, who experiments different levels of breakdown everyday, but no one has managed yet to break Mello’s Master Breakdown during the early hours when he was recording his bass… Well, after eighteen hours, it’s not that easy…
Buzz is here with us, and he is probably having much more fun than any of us… Today he crossed our little pond from side to side for the first time… He is exercising a lot, since everyone (except Adair, aka Ram) goes jogging and he follows… Sometimes Buzz looks at me and I can imagine him saying: “Life in the country is lovely, there’s a party everyday… We should stay here…”
Last week we did the first official photoshoot with Humberto, and photographer Natalia Lett, from Sao Paulo, came here to register this moment. All things were fast, since we wanted to keep working all nightlong, and the photos in this diary are from that day…
On the next day, we had a big surprise: a headbanger crying for real, in front of me… As we were recording one of our most rhythmic songs, with clean guitars and acoustic guitars, but also with guitar distortion (yes, we had both clean guitars and guitar distortion parts), Mr. Eduardo Martinez entered the room to hear the final version of T*** ** ***** and simply broke down crying…
Humberto put unique leading vocals in that song, in a very different style from hat he is used to. Immediately after everyone saw a headbanger crying, he said: “I was here imagining all things the lyrics are saying and all the possibilities this song is offering us… I can’t wait to see this song mixed and mastered by Tommy.”
And I said: “I can’t wait to let our FANS hear this music…”
Soon we’ll be back with a video of the recordings…
Aquiles
APRIL.16.2009 – Aquiles Priester on Mundo 47
Aquiles Priester, ex-Angra and considered one of the best drummers in the whole world, was in Florianópolis on the last weekend, recording the bases for Hangar’s new album, his band for more than 10 years. The chosen studio was The Magic Place, belonging to Renato Pimentel, and audio production is under the supervision of Adair Daufembach.
Aquiles said that, after a careful research among numerous studios in Brazil, he opted for The Magic Place because of its large room and excellent acoustic.
Visual producer Antonio Rossa was in charge of clicking this event and will send the photos to all worldly-known, most widely read drumming magazines and also the drummer’s sponsorships.
Hangar will release its new album within a few months. Audio mixing/mastering will take place in Germany, in May.
APRIL.09.2009 – Hangar’s Recording Diaries: Carrying on with the Recordings…
While I was recording the drums in Florianópolis, I received a call from Serginho Herval, Roupa Nova’s drummer, inviting me to go to the cocktail party of their newly released DVD, named “Roupa Nova em Londres, uma viagem inesquecível” (Roupa Nova in London: an unforgettable trip).
He told me wonderful things about recording in the studio that got famous for recording many Beatles albums, called Abbey Road. Every time I meet Serginho, I am in awe of this guy’s life. He has been playing in Roupa Nova for 29 years, and I don’t even open my mouth in order to learn from his experience.
Numerous artists were there, and I was representing the working classes of Heavy Metal…
I had a lot of fun and I can say the DVD is excellent in every aspect, specially the mixing.
Open Parenthesis… It’s time to think:
On the next day it was time to resume our recording, and we decided to create a new, mobile unit of Daufembach’s studio and finish all our recording in Tatuí.
There we are isolated from the rest of the world, and we can work whenever it pleases ourselves…
We are already recording the parts of guitars and bass. The guitar part is abnormally heavy! This time, it seems all things conspired with us: the guitarist, the guitar, the audio technician, the amp, the environment, the songs and, most importantly, the general need to outdo ourselves. I am quite surprised with the result; I was feeling very awkward to record a new CD after TROYC, but I********* (this can be the album’s title) exceeded our expectations.
On Monday Humberto starts recording the songs, and we are looking forward to show you little teasers of our new songs with him as leading vocal.
We’ll soon be back with more videos!

APRIL.09.2009 – King of Drums There are fans who would give their entire Sepultura collection to see this: Aquiles Priester, ex-Angra and considered one of the best drummers in the whole world, recording the bases for Hangar’s new album. Those recording sections took place at The Magic Place studio, Florianópolis, under the supervision of Adair Daufembach. Visual producer Antonio Rossa – who was in awe of Aquiles’ giant drum kit- clicked the whole event and will send the photos to all worldly-known, most widely read drumming magazines.
APRIL.05.2009 – Aquiles Priester Records Drums at The Magic Place Studio Who said major rock stars don’t pass by Florianópolis? Recently, the island’s music scene has shown quality enough to gather musicians from all over the country and world. Between March 26th and 29th, the “monster” Aquiles Priester recorded in Florianópolis the drums for the upcoming Hangar’s CD at The Magic Place studio.
On March 24th, at night, the team formed by musical producer Adair Daufembach and Renato Pimentel (Brasil Papaya), the studio’s owner and manager, set up Aquiles’ drum kit and on the 25th prepared the audio and sound-checking part. With the huge drum kit properly set, they started recording, thing that lasted four days and was accompanied by drummers Alex Paulista (Brasil Papaya) and Felipe Malisca (Syndrome).
Hangar is a high-profiled metal band and Aquiles Priester has been repeatedly considered the best drummer in Brasil and one of the world’s tops. And The Magical Place studio was his option for recording the yet unnamed new CD. Based on Adair’s advice, Aquiles chose the studio for its large rooms, which have a perfect acoustic. “Here we have a very nice home-like atmosphere that I need while working, making me relaxed to do a good job. It is the best drum recording ever done by Hangar” said Aquiles.
In January, Hangar started looking for a new lead singer after Nando Fernandes left the band. In March, after choosing among 150 candidates, the fortunate Chosen One and the band took refuge in Tauí –São Paulo, to give the new singer a chance to know the band a little more and to take the final decisions concerning the CD. “Humberto Sobrinho is the new lead singer, and he fits well in our main aims, both musical and professionally, being tough and demonstrating an amazing versatile voice” says the drummer.
While recording, Aquiles used for the first time a brand-new Mapex kit, featuring a bass drum on the left side and a timbalito to do some different grooves. When talking about cymbals, he brought two prototypes of signature rides made especially for him by Paiste, with larger cymbal bells that lead to a clearer, more definite sound, plus three different snare drums.
Aquiles brought a series of equipment that were at hand to broad his options, a trademark of a drummer who likes variety and says to have freedom to show his abilities in Hangar. When on live performance, Aquiles is known to be faithful to what is done in studio: “I respect my fans and, consequently, I’m faithful to what is on the CD. Live performance is a thing that must be done appropriately.”
Talking about what will be on the CD, the team promises a fast, extreme one, since the band is always evolving/changing, though always being faithful to its initial aims. Although the lyrics are yet to be finished, they’ll have as a theme overcoming difficulties and outdoing one’s own capacity. The whole team is very positive about the result, since the competence of all is beyond all doubt, as is the quality of sound, equipment and studio.
In the words of Ricardo Pimentel: “I believe the recording process went exactly like Aquiles and Adair had imagined, since we used top equipment and paid particular attention to music execution and arrangement. Undoubtedly, it was a pleasure to meet Aquiles and Adair, both nice, competent people and, of course, to have them recording here in The Magical Place!”
Audio mixing and mastering are to take place on May 15th with Tommy Newton, the same of the previous CD, “The Reason of Your Conviction”.
APRIL.03.2009 – Aquiles Priester Playlist Now you fan can to know what played on Aquiles Priester Player. You can check early in the month in left side of site the list with the albuns that Aquiles Priester heard in anterior month.
APRIL.01.2009 – Hangar’s Recording Diaries: Next Stage! It was a total of five work-days: one just for sound-checking and four to record 12 songs. On the first day one song was recorded, two in the second, another two in the third and four in the fourth day. I left the worst tracks to Days Two and Three, since the tension of Day One had passed and I was already getting used to the room’s acoustic and with my microphone.
Recording is just like that: every single person has a way of doing it and it is not always advisable to change those ways…
On the second day, I started with the seven-and-a-half minute song, which was named “Death Trash Metal”… Jesus, that gave us a taste of Hell… On the next day, while I was listening what was recorded, I decided to change whole the instrumental part and that made my legs turn to jelly, just like in the day before, after recording the same track… On Day Three, should I be able to buy a new set of legs, I would have done it.
On the last day, while I was doing the soundcheck and warming up, Malisca (who was soon nicknamed Marisco or Marica) entered the room to film and accidentally stepped on the cable of one of my over-heads and unplugged the microphone. Unfortunately, Adair just noticed that when I was already in the middle of the song, and that was when he said: “The little shit truck parked, its tyre was punctured and the shit is all over the place!”
KEY > LITTLE SHIT TRUCK PASSING BY: means we are foreseeing something that IS bound to go wrong and we do absolutely nothing to stop it from happening. The little truck is full of shit, its tyre is punctured, the shit goes all over and theirs is nothing we can do.
In that music’s case, the truck turned upside-down and guess who the driver was? Yes, Murphy, and his mate was the Contrary…
I started all over again, felling horrible, since all the effort and concentration would be required again, but that was the only way and that was what I did. To hours and a half later, the song was ready.
While recording, I used different snare drums and cymbals, based on the music speed, and the result was very nice.
Since you all are so curious, we decided to film some parts of the songs, and some little things that happened in the studio while I was there…
Marisca was the responsible for filming and filming edition.
I would also like to thank Renato Pimentel of The Magical Place studio, to Adair Daufembach and Marisca for the wonderful atmosphere that we had during these 5 days together. The photographer Antonio Rossa, from Florianópolis, was another fantastic person I met and was the one who did and excellent photo shoot that you can take a look below:

Recording is different every time, and exciting because whenever you are recording a new CD, you never know what’ll happen, if people are going to both accept and understand the new thing. It was awesome to share all those things with those guys, because they were all musicians, and also gave me confidence and cheered the good ideas that appeared while I was recording. The best part is that I felt nothing was faked. All that vibration was genuine.
Now we are going to start recording the other instruments and we’ll proceed with the diaries, keeping
you informed. In the meantime, check out this video; I hope you like it.

04.JUN.2008 - REVIEW AT METAL HAMMER GERMANY Metal Hammer 06/08 Progressive Metal Release date 23.5.
The lyrical concept of THE REASON OF YOUR CONVICTION in a nutshell: As a few colleagues before, also the Brazilians let a serial killer do what he does best. Even musically this 3rd album became almost a killer album. Besides the excellent musicianship and album production all songs have catchy lines. "Call Me In The Name Of Death", "Everlasting Is The Salvation" and "One More Chance" would certainly belong to the best songs on the current albums from Evergrey or Symphony X, no doubt, these bands are their idols. Complex song material with sometimes surprisingly results. Fans of progressive Power Metal will certainly love this album.
